As a local real estate agent and mom who knows the value of a good summer adventure (without breaking the bank), I’ve rounded up some of my favorite family-friendly things to do in Austin during the  summer. Whether you’re new to the area, just moved into your dream home, or are exploring neighborhoods for your next chapter, these ideas will help you make the most of the season with your kids.

Explore Local Splash Pads & Pools

Austin has dozens of free or low-cost splash pads that are perfect for cooling off. Try Liz Carpenter Splash Pad at Butler Park, Pease Park’s Kingsbury Commons and The Quarry Splash Pad at Williamson County Southwest Regional Park to name a few. Many city pools offer free admission or deeply discounted rates as well. Bring plenty of sunscreen and pack a picnic lunch for a great day of fun and exploration.

2. Austin Public Library Events

The Austin Public Library isn’t just about books—it offers free story times, arts & crafts, and STEM activities all summer long. Check the event calendar at your nearest branch. It’s air-conditioned, educational, and totally free!  One must see Library is the Downtown Austin Branch.  You will have to pay a small amount for parking but a day adventure there is worth it.  Tack on park time or simply walk the trails near the downtown area to explore.

Bonus: Kids can sign up for the summer reading program and win prizes.

3. Zilker Park & Barton Springs (on a budget)

While Barton Springs has an entrance fee, it’s only $2–$5 for residents, and totally free from 9–10 a.m. daily! Zilker Park next door offers tons of space to fly kites, kick soccer balls, or take a mini nature walk.  You can even rent paddle boards, canoes and kayacks for an extra fee for some added fun.

Real estate tip: Homes near Zilker tend to be in high demand due to proximity to recreation.  It's an amazing option worth considering if you love the outdoors!

4. Blanton Museum of Art – Free Thursdays

Introduce your kids to creativity and culture with a visit to the Blanton Museum. On Thursdays, admission is free! They also host occasional kid-friendly tours and workshops.  This is a great indoor option on those hot summer days and also a great option for an educational exploration.  This is a great stop after visiting the nearby UT campus or State Capitol if you would like to make a day of it.

5. DIY Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt

Create a summer bucket list or scavenger hunt to explore your own neighborhood. Find the oldest tree, the most colorful house, or chalk drawings on the sidewalk.  If you’re considering a move, this is also a great way to “test drive” a neighborhood’s vibe while including your kids.

6. Catch a Movie in the Park

Look for outdoor movie nights hosted by Austin Parks and Rec or organizations like Alamo Drafthouse. Many are free, and they’re perfect for bringing lawn chairs, blankets, snacks or a light dinner.  Also check out some of the local movie theatures as they offer discounted movies during the summer months.  My boys still talk about the time we watched The Sandlot under the stars for a summer movie night.

7. Summber Bowling Program

Several of the bowling alleys around town participate in the summer bowling program.  You can register each child and they email weekly vouchers out for free bowling.  My boys always love visiting the different locations around town for some cool indoor fun.

Summer is about making memories—and whether you’re in your forever home or searching for it, I’m here to help you find a place where your family can thrive.

If you're thinking about buying, selling, or leasing in Austin (or just want to know which neighborhoods are the most kid-friendly), I’d love to connect. Let's find a home that fits your family's lifestyle—fun included!
